If you’re going to be on vacation or otherwise indisposed don’t assume you get an automatic extension. You have to file IRS form 4868.
If your W-2 or 1099 is wrong then make the appropriate adjustment and attach a statement as to why. Also, wherever possible contact your employer or the business who issued the 1009 or W-2 and get them to adjust it and send you and the IRS the new one.
IRA contributions for 2009 can be made up to April 15, 2010 but can’t be made for 2009 after that date no matter whether you get an extension. Any contribution made after April 15 has to count for 2010 tax year. Any contribution made from Jan 1 through April 15 can be counted on 2010 or 2009, it’s your choice.
Commuting expenses can’t be deducted.
Make sure you look under the appropriate column in the tax table for your filing status.
Attach your w-2 (the 1 that says “to be filed with federal tax return”) and all 1099’s to your tax return when you mail it. If you e-file attach a digital scanned copy whenever possible.
